Headline compute prices fell this year. Storage, data transfer and managed AI services went the other way, and providers like OVH announced across-the-board rises. Here is where your cloud money is actually going in 2026 and the four line items that usually cut the bill by a third.
Google cut compute prices by about 8 percent in the first quarter of 2026. In the same period it raised the price of Nearline multi-region storage by 50 percent. OVH, a popular choice for cost-conscious European businesses, pre-announced rises of 5 to 10 percent through September, citing what it is paying Dell and Lenovo for hardware. AWS and Azure have not raised headline prices, but the services businesses actually use more of every year, storage, data transfer between regions, backups and managed AI, have quietly become the biggest lines on the invoice.
The result is that a small business running the same application it ran last year is paying more for it, even though the "price of a server" went down.
When we review a client's bill, the first pass almost always shows the same pattern. The servers people think of as "the cloud" are a third of the cost or less. The rest:
For a typical small business application, that takes a bill of $400 a month to somewhere between $200 and $280, with no change to how the application works.
Rarely, for the saving alone. Moving costs engineering time and the savings between the large providers are smaller than the savings from fixing the four items above. It is worth moving when the current provider has raised prices on the specific things you use, when you have credits elsewhere (see free cloud credits for startups), or when you need a region closer to your customers. For UAE clients, both AWS and Google now have UAE regions, and latency to Dubai is a legitimate reason to move an application that used to run in Europe.
Our Cloud & DevOps plan from $300 a month (about AED 1,100 or £240) includes the monthly cost review, retention settings, monitoring and the deletion of things nobody uses. If you just want the bill looked at once, we do a fixed-price review for $200 that comes back with the four changes above priced for your account. On most bills it pays for itself in the first month.
