If your Google traffic fell this year and nothing changed on your site, you are not imagining it. AI Overviews now answer around half of searches on the results page, and most searches end without a click. Here is what happened and what still works.
Three figures explain most of what business owners are seeing in Google Analytics this year.
So if your site's traffic fell 20 to 40 percent since last year with no change in rankings, the most likely explanation is not your site. It is that Google is keeping the visit.
The traffic that disappeared is mostly informational: people looking up "what is a custom ERP", "how does VAT work in the UAE", "best way to track stock". Google answers those now. If your blog traffic was built on that kind of content, it will not come back, and no amount of SEO work will change it.
The traffic that survived is transactional and local: "software company Dubai", "custom app developer Manchester", "book a consultation", your company name. People with a decision to make still click. In our own analytics the enquiries did not fall with the traffic, because the visits that converted were never the ones reading explainers.
The first thing to do is open Analytics, split your traffic by landing page, and see which kind you lost. Many businesses find their leads are flat and only the vanity number dropped.
1. A site that converts the visits you do get. With fewer visits, each one has to work harder. That means a clear offer above the fold, a price or a starting price, a way to book a call without emailing, and pages that load in under three seconds on a phone. This is the highest-return fix on the list and it is usually a few days of work on an existing site, or a rebuild from $500 (about AED 1,800 or £400) if the site is past saving.
2. Being the source the AI cites. AI Overviews and assistants like ChatGPT do cite sources, and the ones they pick share a pattern: a specific number, a clear list, a local fact, an author with a name. A page that says "custom ERP for a 25-person UAE company costs $4,000 to $12,000, here is the breakdown" gets cited. A page that says "costs vary depending on your needs" does not. Rewrite your best pages to be quotable.
3. Channels Google cannot keep. Google Business Profile for local searches, LinkedIn for B2B, WhatsApp for the customers you already have, and referrals from clients whose projects went well. Every one of these was working before AI Overviews and none of them is affected.
Monthly SEO retainers that report on rankings and traffic without reporting on enquiries. Rankings are worth less than they were, and traffic is no longer the number that matters. If your agency cannot show you leads, ask them to, or stop.
Also stop producing generic explainer content. It was the cheapest kind of content to make and it is the kind that AI replaced first.
We build business websites around conversion rather than traffic: booking built in, prices on the page, fast on mobile, and content written to be cited. We also do a fixed-price review of an existing site for $250 that tells you which traffic you lost, whether your leads moved with it, and the three changes that would matter most.
Book a free call, bring your Analytics, and we will show you what actually changed.
We build the systems described in this article. Let’s talk about your project.
